Dennis Jacobs's recorded questions about a body and custody became part of the defense's argument in Steven Avery's 2007 trial that investigators focused on Avery soon after Teresa Halbach's vehicle was found. Remiker identified Jacobs's voice but disputed that the exchange showed Remiker shared that focus.
Dennis Jacobs
Manitowoc County detective whose recorded questions figured in argument over the investigation's early focus.
About
Dennis Jacobs, a Manitowoc County detective, was heard on recordings played during Steven Avery's 2007 trial. After Teresa Halbach's vehicle was found, Jacobs asked a dispatcher about a body and whether Avery was in custody. In a separate exchange with Detective Dave Remiker, he asked what investigators had found beyond the vehicle and whether a person was in custody. The defense argued that these questions showed an early focus on Avery.
When the defense played the calls during Remiker's examination, Remiker identified Jacobs's voice but resisted treating Jacobs's questions as evidence of his own view. The court later distinguished Jacobs's apparent focus on Avery from Remiker's testimony about his thinking at the time. The defense returned to the recorded questions in closing argument. Jacobs's role in these proceedings was as a recorded-call participant, not a witness giving live testimony.
