About
Wisconsin State Trooper Cindy Paine testified in Steven Avery’s trial about license plates found in a station wagon at Avery Salvage Yard. William Brandes called her to the vehicle, where she saw a bent plate behind the driver’s compartment, photographed it, and identified the physical front and rear plates. She said the number matched the one searchers sought, but she saw the plate only after Brandes had unfolded it; what she knew of its earlier folded condition came from him. The plates and photographs were admitted without objection. In Brendan Dassey’s trial, Thomas Fassbender identified Paine as the photographer and said the plates had been removed and unfolded to read their number, then placed back in the vehicle for her photograph.
