About
William Brandes, Jr., a volunteer firefighter, found folded license plates in a station wagon while searching vehicles at the Avery Salvage Yard on November 8, 2005. In Steven Avery’s trial, he testified that the number was not visible until he unfolded the plates, checked it with a state trooper, and returned them to the car. On cross-examination, he said he had not written down the number and had confirmed it against the trooper’s record. Trooper Cindy Paine testified that she saw a plate after Brandes called her over; her account of its previously folded condition came from him. In Brendan Dassey’s trial, investigator Thomas Fassbender identified Brandes as the searcher who found Teresa Halbach’s plates in a salvaged vehicle along the driveway to the Avery and Dassey residences.
