About
During Steven Avery's 2007 trial, Manitowoc County Deputy David Siders testified on Day 6 about a November 7, 2005 search in a field north of the Avery property. He said he found a burn barrel, removed a metal rim, and saw ashes and melted plastic that appeared to include cell-phone parts. He identified an emblem he saw at the barrel as Motorola's. Siders said he kept custody of the barrel until turning it over to Kevin Heimerl, but did not seize it or later search its contents. The court admitted three barrel photographs after the defense stated it had no objection.
On cross-examination, Siders clarified that the apparent phone parts were mixed into wet material, not lying atop the ash as counsel suggested. He said he could not discern the Motorola emblem in the photographs, although he had seen it at the barrel, and would not estimate which trailer was closer to the barrel. Asked why he had not joined the dives, he said his team had not been requested to assist.
