Julie Cramer testified about Brutus’s alerts and the limits of what they could identify. Thomas Fassbender described the property searches and faced questions about search assignments, the Toyota key, and DNA findings; two other witnesses testified about folded license plates found in a station wagon.

Full day summary

Julie Cramer described Brutus’s search of the Avery Salvage Yard. She reported repeated indications at a vehicle beneath brush near a blue tarp, one alert in a trailer bathroom, and alerts on two burn barrels. Brutus gave no indication at the car crusher or among crushed cars. Cramer said the vehicle alert suggested blood or some type of human remain, but she could not identify whose material he smelled, its type, or whether its source was living or dead. Thomas Fassbender described the initial search for Teresa Halbach alive, later searches, and the handling of her RAV4. He testified about a Toyota key found in Steven Avery’s trailer, license plates found in a salvaged vehicle, and pieces of bone found in a burn area behind Avery’s garage. On cross-examination, he agreed the key was found during the seventh trailer entry and said he was not present for its discovery. He defended assigning Lenk and Colborn to search duties and agreed that investigators had found no Halbach DNA in the trailer or garage by the March 1–2 warrants. Outside the jury’s presence, the defense raised unresolved requests and an unconfirmed concern about burn-barrel custody; the court asked counsel to confer. William Brandes described finding and unfolding folded license plates in a station wagon. Trooper Cindy Paine said she saw a bent plate there, photographed it, and matched its number to the one sought. The court received the plate photographs and physical plates without objection.
