In Steven Avery's 2007 trial, Earl Avery was discussed as the salvage-yard owner who permitted volunteer searchers to look for Teresa Halbach's vehicle and as Robert Fabian's rabbit-hunting companion on October 31, 2005. His DNA reference sample was also used for comparison with physical evidence.

Salvage-yard owner and Avery family member who permitted volunteers to search for Teresa Halbach's vehicle.
About
Earl Avery was described as a salvage-yard owner who gave Pamela Sturm and her daughter permission to search for Teresa Halbach or her vehicle on November 5, 2005. He advised them to walk because the roads were muddy; Nicole Sturm confirmed the permission but said she had not been present when her mother asked. Robert Fabian described rabbit hunting with Earl on October 31 and encountering smoke that smelled of plastic near Steven Avery's residence. Investigators collected Earl's DNA reference sample, and an analyst testified that the profiles from the RAV4 hood latch and key did not match the other standards she examined, including Earl's. In Brendan Dassey's trial, Earl was also identified as present during an interview of his daughter Kayla and intermittently present during a later interview.
