Dave Remiker

Detective Dave Remiker testified in Steven Avery’s trial about the search for Teresa Halbach and evidence found at the Avery property. He described a brief consent search of Avery’s residence on November 4 and said he had no reason at that point to regard Avery as a suspect. After Halbach’s RAV4 was reported on the property, Remiker said he matched its VIN to her vehicle and directed officers not to touch it. He also described an answering-machine message at Barb Janda’s trailer and collected a bullet fragment found by another investigator during a later garage search. Cross-examination addressed dispatch calls suggesting an early focus on Avery, the interval between finding garage shell casings and finding the fragment, and Remiker’s inability to recall whether a nearby air compressor had been moved before he saw the fragment. In Brendan Dassey’s trial, witnesses described Remiker photographing Avery’s trailer before a search and playing and recording the Janda answering-machine message; one witness believed Remiker had found an Auto Trader magazine.
